Allama Tayeebur Rahman Barbhuiya, a luminary of humanity, great philanthropist, Educationist and propagator of communal harmony was born on 26th June, 1931 at Rangauti, Hailakandi District of Assam. He was an excellent missionary and visionary. After completing his primary education, he took admission in Madrassa education and stupendously secured 1st Class first position in Madrassa Title Examination (1957) under the State Madrassa Education Board, Assam. He also stood 1st Class 1st in M.A. (Arabic) Examination under Gauhati University in 1971 and achieved Gold Medal. Besides, he also achieved Bisharad Degree in Hindi in 1955.

During his student life he joined freedom struggle and was rigourously engaged. As a nationalist student leader, he vehemently opposed the scheme of partition of India and worked a lot to spearhead the campaign of the nationalist group in Surma Valley. In 1957 he started his brilliant and distinguished career as an Assistant Teacher at Hailakandi Senior Madrassa, he was promoted to Superintendent in 1976 and retired in 1996 from the same institution.

He was a great author and learned scholar in English, Bengali, Hindi, Arabic and Urdu. He has authored 17 books in various languages. Maulana Tayeebur Rahman Barbhuiya was honoured with Efficiency Award, by the Central Wakf Council, Ministry of Law, Govt. of India. He was also awarded the most prestigious National Award by the President of India for his dedication in the field of Education. He was also honoured with Baskandi Sheikh Ahmed Ali Award 2015 by Govt. of Assam for his contribution to Education, Social services & promoting communal harmony.

In 2016, University of Science & Technology Meghalaya conferred him the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Letters, HONORIS CAUSIA (Hon. D.Litt) for his outstanding contribution in Education, spiritualism, community development, integrity & communal harmony.

In 19th December 1989, Allama Tayeebur Rahman Barbhuiya was unanimously elected as the 2nd Ameer-e-Shariat of North East India which was ornamented till his last breath. He was a founder member & patron of All India Milli Council. He was also Working Committee Member of All India Muslim Personal Law Board. He was a member of governing body of Darul Uloom Nadwatul Ulama, Lucknow, a world renowned Islamic university. He was a spiritual guide for millions of Muslims in India as well as Abroad.

Late Allama Tayeebur Rahman Barbhuiya saheb was an outstanding personality of North East India because of his unparalleled scholarly performance in the entire North East India who was honoured and respected by all sections of the society irrespective of caste creed & religion.  This legend departed from us on 27th February 2019.
